ESSENTIAL OIL DILUTION GUIDELINE
NEWBORNS TO THE ELDERLY
Been a crazy busy week, so I haven’t been on too much but I wanted to take a few minutes to talk about the importance of properly diluting your essential oils before using…for me it was a tad confusing trying to figure out the right calculations when I decided to start experimenting with essential oil blends…so I have put together a few notes about essential oil dilution guidelines that will hopefully make it a little easier for those of you in the same boat I was.
1.) THE IMPORTANCE OF ESSENTIAL OIL DILUTION
Essential oils are super concentrated and contain all of the memory and immune system of the plant. We reap the benefits from this every time we use them. But because they are so highly concentrated they can cause some serious adverse effects if not properly diluted.
2.) HOW POWERFUL
ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?
Just a few examples, it takes:
- a) There are approx. 75 LEMONS in a 15 ml bottle of lemon oil and there are 300 drops in a 15 ml bottle, 1 drop of lemon oil is equal to 1/4 of a lemon.
- b) 27 square feet of LAVENDER plants are used to fill a 15ml bottle of Lavender
- c) There is 1 pound of PEPPERMINT plant material in a 15ml bottle of peppermint…again with 300 drops in a 15 ml bottle and 1 drop of peppermint oil is = to 28 cups of peppermint tea!
So keep in mind how powerful essential oils are, and how far just 1 drop goes!
I’m not saying essential oils should not be used, I’m just saying they should be used carefully, with proper education and in safe dilution amounts.
Be aware of a wide range of possible reactions
Just as you can have allergies/intolerances to food you can also have allergies/intolerance to essential oils, but because essential oils are so concentrated, your reaction has the potential to be equally more severe.
Reactions can include various skin irritations, headaches, preexisting condition aggravation, photosensitivity…most commonly with the use of citrus-based essential oils (which could cause very bad sunburns)
Many essential oils are are mucous membrane irritants, meaning they can have a drying and irritating effect on your eyes, nose, mouth, and private parts. So be sure to be cautious when taking them orally.
3.) YOUR GUIDE TO DILUTING ESSENTIAL OILS
Some oils are downright poisonous when ingested, some are dangerous when applied topically if not properly diluted in a carrier oil. Adding essential oils to a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut, grapeseed, sweet almond, olive oil etc., the active chemical compounds are better absorbed into the skin and more easily applied over the surface of your body for better therapeutic benefits.
How much or how little essential oils to use depends on what your purpose is. Here is a brief guide to dilution of essential oils:
.5% Dilution best for Infants & Babies
This is ideal for those who intend to use an essential oil on children 6 months to 6 years of age.
.5% = 1 drop per 2 teaspoons of carrier oil
1% Dilution Best for Kids & the Elderly
Recommended for children over the age of 6, pregnant women, elderly adults, and those with sensitive skin,
and those with preexisting conditions. This dilution is recommended when using essential oils topically,
for massage or in lotions and rubs.
1% = 1 drop per teaspoon of carrier oil or 5-6 drops per ounce.
2% Dilution Best for Adults
Ideal for most normal adults. Use in daily aromatherapy or topical applications.
2% = 2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil or 10-12 drops per ounce.
3% Dilution Ideal for Remedies & Specific Issues
Ideal for treating temporary health concerns,
as well as topical application for muscle pain, injury or respiratory problems.
3% = 3 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil or 15-18 drops per ounce
25% Dilution *Recommended for Healthy Adults
There are many essential oils that can be used at this strength.
Some can even be *neat (used with no dilution). Recommended for use with healthy adults.
25% dilution = 25 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil or 125-150 drops per ounce.
4.) BUT THERE IS GREAT NEWS FOR ESSENTIAL OIL USERS!
At the end of the day, as with anything when used correctly essential oils can be amazingly wonderful, safe and natural remedies. I use essential oils on a regular basis…I diffuse non-stop, in my house, my office, my car and even on my person…in my jewelry. I use blends for skin care, hair care, sleep, mood, illness, personal care products, bath products…you name it, I use it! I start off cautiously, I research the oils in question and am careful to properly dilute them. I have very sensitive skin and am sensitive to many things and I have yet to encounter any problems using essential oils. 5.) DON’T BE DISCOURAGED.
This post isn’t meant to discourage anyone from using essential oils, but rather to encourage proper use through research of how to safely use something as concentrated and powerful as essential oils.
So do a little research, get out your oils and start experimenting…it’s absolutely amazing the power in each little drop of essential oil…essential oils have really changed my life…little by little, from planters warts to hair growth to just over all well being from day to day. I would never choose to look back. I love my new oily life!
